RSA course FAQs

What does responsible service of alcohol mean in practice?

Responsible service of alcohol means that licensees and staff comply with the liquor laws in Queensland. It also means providing a safe environment for customers and only selling, serving, and promoting alcohol professionally. Moreover, this means that you have the ability to spot signs of excessive drinking and know how to respond and act accordingly.

Why is servicing alcohol responsibly important?

Alcohol can cause harm when consumed excessively. It can cause driving accidents, crime, public and family violence, and anti-social behaviors. Therefore, it is important to sell and serve it considering the customers’ well-being to minimize potential harm.

Aside from checking the age of the customer you are serving, you are also responsible for determining when they are already intoxicated and whether they should be served.

Moreover, licensees must ensure that every required staff has RSA training and certification. Otherwise, they will face penalties.

How long does it take to get RSA certificate?

RSA courses usually take 4 to 6 hours. At Prestige Service Training, it takes 3.5 hours to complete the training course.

Upon successful assessment, you will receive your course certification the same day.

Does the RSA certificate expire?

Once you have obtained an RSA Statement of Attainment in Queensland, the certification does not expire.

However, you can take short refresher courses to test your knowledge.

Free RSA refresher courses include:

  • Minors and the responsible service of alcohol
  • Checking identification and responsible service of alcohol
  • Unduly intoxicated patrons and the RSA
  • Disorderly conduct and the RSA course
  • Promotions and practices for the RSA

These short courses cover various subtopics that can enhance your knowledge and skills in this field.

What if you lost your RSA certificate?

If you lose your RSA certificate, you can contact the RTO where you obtained your Statement of Attainment. They should be able to reissue your certification. You can search for your RTO contact details on Training.gov.au.

If you can’t remember which RTO issued your certification, you must re-take the RTA course to get a new certification.

Can you use an RSA certification from another Australian state or territory?

Yes, you can use an interstate RSA certificate in Queensland if that is a Statement of Attainment in Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol. It means that it meets the requirements of the Australian Quality Training Framework. If you do not have this kind of nationally recognised unit, you will need to get certified through an RTO.

Who is responsible for ensuring staff is trained?

Licensees must ensure that all staff that serves or supplies alcohol are RSA-certified. These include food and beverage attendants, sales representatives, door staff, and security personnel.

Volunteers at premises with a community club license, community liquor permit, or restricted liquor permit are not required to hold an RSA training certificate, but the licensee or permit holder must ensure that there is an RSA-certified person who will supervise them.

Do I need to get my RSA training before starting a job?

Not necessarily. Some employers may hire you without an RSA certificate, but it is one of the legal requirements in Queensland to complete the RSA training program within 30 days. Some employers may require you to get certified first before you start working with them.

In general, it is recommended that you take an RSA course with an RTO before you look for a job in the hospitality or liquor industry. This will make it much easier for you to secure employment.

What is an RSA competency card?

An RSA competency card is proof that you have satisfactorily completed training in the RSA course. In Queensland, the requirement is a Statement of Attainment issued upon the successful completion of the national training package competency Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol.

What is RGS certification?

Responsible Service of Gambling (RGS) is another training that is required if you want to work in establishments with liquor and gambling activities, such as pubs. You need an RSG certification, also called Statement of Attainment, from legitimate training providers. In this course, you learn how to maintain safety in the workplace, including identifying potential issues associated with gambling addictions.
